Blog for 12-14-15

Prompt: Pretend you are the best friend of one of the characters.  Write them a letter.

Book: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

Author: John Boyne

Page #: 1-85

~~~~
Disclaimer:  Bruno is a boy and in the story has no interest in girls, and only has friends that are boys.  Therefore, I changed my name to Evan.  Both Bruno and "Evan" are 10 years old so their writing isn't as formal as an adult's would be.  However, they do know some formal language.
Letter:
1234 Oakley Avenue
 Berlin, Germany  98765
December 14th, 2015
Dear Bruno,
     Berlin has been very boring without you here.  There is not much to do on our street anymore, it's just been quiet.  Lately, your house has been looking really empty, maybe it's because I'm used to it being full with life.  Anyway, how's Gretel?  Your sister was always weird, especially when she was with her friends!  One time they kept trying to force me to play dolls with them while you were in the bathroom.  Luckily you came out before they had they chance to even give me one!  Anyways, this letter isn't supposed to be about me, it's supposed to be about you.
     I have had a few questions on my mind to ask you lately.  What's it like in your new house?  Is it bigger than your old house?  Do you have any new friends?  I hope you didn't replace either me, Daniel, Martin, or Karl! We're best friends and you can't replace us, we're simply irreplaceable.  Anyway, if you do have new friends, what are they like?  Surely they can't be as good as us but they must be nice.  I wonder what their names are.  Are you planning on coming back?  I'm starting to miss you at school.   However, there's a new student and his name is Adam.  He's really pleasant, yet not as much as you are.
     That has been the only exciting thing that happened since you left.  I'm telling you Bruno, you have have to come back!  It must be pretty nice over there if you haven't come back to your old house yet.  I hope you don't forget us.  So, how's school over there?  It must be completely different!  I wish you could've stayed.
     Sadly, I have to put this letter to an end because I have to go.  Mother says that we have to go to a friend's house for Schwarzwalder.  I hope you have time to write me back.  Wiedersehen!
                                                                                                          Sincerely,
                                                                                                                            Evan
Blog for 11-30-15 : Non-Fiction Book
Book: Endangered Forest Animals
Author: Dave Taylor
Page #: 1-30 (Finished)
Summary:
Many forest animals have become endangered.  Two main reasons why they have become near to extinction is because of being hunted and deforestation.  The destruction of their habitat has occurred to make room for farms, cities, etc.  The animals have also been hunted abundantly and their population has been nearly wiped out because of their unique coats, threats, etc.  In order to preserve them there have been new laws preventing them from being hunted and national parks have taken in these animals to protect them.  All these endangered forest animals are different but still share the same problem, they're all close to extinction.
Interesting Passage:
There were many interesting passages in the whole entire story about certain animals, forests, and much more.  It was kind of hard to pick one, however I found a passage relating to the Asian elephant that caught my attention and stuck to my brain.  The passage reads, "The people who use elephants for labor do not want their elephants to have babies because that means the mother elephant cannot work for several years while she is looking after her youngster.  Instead of allowing the animals to have babies, the elephant owners catch new wild elephants to replace the aging ones.  This means that the wild herds keep getting smaller." (Page 22)  I found this passage interesting because it is shocking that people are using animals to their own benefit and aren't allowing them to repopulate.  Not letting them repopulate and capturing new elephants decrease the population, yet they are still forcing them into hard work.  I feel as if they should't be put to labor, be able to have babies, and maintain the population.
What I Learned:
I have learned many facts about the endangered forest animals.  Not only that but I learned how to identify specific forests, and how to save the animals living in them.  I learned that in our area we mostly have deciduous trees.  Their leaves turn different colors in fall and fall off when winter comes around.  I also learned about such animals like the lowland gorillas.  The gorillas' habitat are being destroyed and they're being hunted by poachers who have interest in taking their heads as trophies.  Lastly, I learned how to save the many forest animals who are endanger.  People, such as yourself and some friends, can buy an acre (43,560 sq. ft) of a forest and that piece of land cannot be cut down, unless authorized by the owners.  This will make sure the animals have a reliable home, safe from destruction.  Overall I learned a lot from this book because it supplied information about certain types of forests, animals, and solutions to help the animals.
11/11/15 - Theme
Prompt:  Theme (Using characters actions, setting, plot events/conflict)
Book: Sold
Author: Patricia McCormick
Page #: 1-263 (Finished)
     In the story Sold by Patricia McCormick two of the overall themes would be fear and the overlooked.  In the story a girl named Lakshmi, whom is 13 years old, is sold into sexual slavery.  She thought she was going to work as a maid, but when she found out the truth she was absolutely terrified.
     At first, when the character is put into her new "home" and has her first customer she reacts scared and defensive, in the story it says, "I bite down with all my might.  He cries out "Aghh!" and I am running." This action, defending herself, proves that she is scared.  After backing out of her new job she refused to work for days on end, until she was forced to work.  She wanted nothing more than to run, but in fear that her family would be robbed their money and that she would get killed, she stayed.
     Lakshmi fights back most of the time to Mumatz, her boss.  Nothing ever comes good our of it though.  She gets beaten with a whip, and gets starved.  Occasionally she gets worse, in the story it says, "What I feel next is the gritty sole of her shoe on the side of my head ... She grinds her foot, and the metal edge of my earrings bites into the flesh of my ears. ... my earlobe has been torn through."  Even though she tries to fight back she is still scared of her boss.  The theme overlooked fits in with this quote too because people fail to notice what actually happens in other countries.  They have no idea what these girls are going through.
     Setting plays a major part in the theme.  Human trafficking usually occurs in poor countries, Nepal is one of them.  She never had the ideal house, she lived in a hut.  After she leaves she lives in a place, far away from home, and if she tries to leave she gets beaten in the head with a pole.  Not only does this make her scared but it forces her to do something she doesn't want to do, work.  Lakshmi is forced to live in a ratty apartment building, surrounded by different old, dirty men.  No one notices what is happening to them though, the story states, "Each day, a thousand people pass below my window. ... Not one looks up."  These girls, forced to work, are overlooked.
     It's only after the conflict when the two themes set into place.  The conflict didn't necessarily start right when she was sold.  It started before, when her stepdad gambles almost everything they have away, which is why she she is sold.  When her stepdad loses everything she suggests to work in the city as a maid to help gain money.  In poor countries, their citizens are over looked.  No one pays attention to the poor, it's the rich people who get the attention, one reason why these girls are sold.
     Overall both themes fit into the story perfectly.  Fear may be displayed more, through the characters emotions but the theme overlooked is part of the story too.  It was the main reason why the book was written in the first place, to gain attention to these unnoticed girls.
1st Quarter Reflections
     Reflecting helps me a lot, it kind of brings me back to reality in a way.  This blog is going to help me notice some mistakes I've been making, and is going to show me what I need to work on. It is a good method to indicate yourself what needs to be finished, and how you're doing so far.
     For the 40 books challenge, I feel as if I wasn't doing enough reading.  I am barley on my fourth book, which is is bad.  I am supposed to at least be on my seventh one.  This quarter my goal is going to at least read 10 or more books.  To help me accomplish this goal I am going to monitor how many pages I read a day, and am going to create a list with 10 books.
     A strategy I have been using has been managing time.   I like to work on things on certain days.  When I'm working on homework, for example a blog I look at the clock and tell myself that I'm going to be done by x time.  It doesn't really rush my work, if I need more time then I'll use it.  It just gives me a goal, and I work better under pressure.
     When I first started this class, I had never really done annotating.  A little notes here and there, but never weekly.  My annotating skills defiantly improved, and has improved my overall learning.  Annotating gives me a closer look on things, and clears things out.  If it weren't for annotating then I'd probably be completely lost through out aow's.
     Vocabulary has effected my the most.  It's easier to read challenging books, knowing some of the words.  It also makes you looks better on your part, take this as an example.  You're talking to a family member and suddenly they get confused.  You say, "I'm sorry did I discombobulate you?" This  makes them more confused, and also makes you look smarter in a way.  There are just so many words that I didn't even know existed, and now I can use them.
     Lastly, my research skills.  I have improved in my research skills by looking more closely at text, annotating helps.  Picking out the most important and relevant parts has effect me, I never knew how to decipher text, to figure out if it's important or not.  I have a clear understanding of it now, and it helps me choose what's best.
     Overall this first quarter has been very useful and educational for me.  I learned many new things I never knew how to do.  These things are going to help me in the future, which I am grateful for.  I wish to learn more.
Narrative Twist: The Lady or The Tiger
A Pinch of Hope
By: Evelyn Mazariego
Princess's Point of View:
If only our secret love wasn’t discovered everything would’ve been fine.  I wouldn’t be in this stupid chair, staring down at my lover whom was to die or get married by another women.  If only I wasn’t a princess, then I would’ve been able to be with him.
As I directed him to the right, my heart started aching.  I didn’t want my lover to die, but I didn’t want him to marry someone else.
I couldn’t do it, I couldn’t watch him marry off and be happy with another woman whom wasn’t me.  He paused right outside the door, his face pale like a ghost.  Turning to me, he  gestured towards the door as if asking for my approval again.  I nodded my head no, and pointed to the other door on the left.  Guilt ran through me, I hated myself for it.  His eyebrows scrunched up in confusion, but he followed the direction in which I was pointing in.
This simple gesture, one that would kill him, made the crowd gasp.  I stood abruptly and yelled three words that could save his life, “Behind the curtains!”  My father looked at me with a strong gaze.  All attention was focused on me, which was planned.  My lover didn’t understand, and so he continued walking.
“He’s choosing!” A bystander in the crowd roared.  Everyone’s heads turned forward, looking solely at the “criminal”.  His hand trembled as he opened the door, he knew not of what awaited him.
His grip tightened on the door handle, and he pulled it open.  This signaled the men to open it all the way, which they did.  I watched in horror as the big cat jumped on top of him.   The crowd yelled, some covered their eyes.  He had just enough strength to push the tiger off of him, and get up.
I watched as my lover ran for his life, his face filled with terror.  He ran towards the curtain, and pushed it to the side.  This revealed a shining bright sword which he grabbed quickly, his hand fumbling to get a grip.   The beast caught up to him.
His reflexes were quick, and he swung the sword at the beast.  The animal backed off, and whimpered in pain.  My love stood up quickly and killed the poor tiger.  Tears spilled out of my eyes, in joy that he didn’t die.
I had no time to waste, picking up my dress with my hands so that it wouldn't ruin, I made my way down to the arena where he still stood.  I went through the tunnels, when I only needed one more to go I heard church bells.  I blocked the sound of the bells ringing in my ears, focusing only on the noise of my heels hitting the cold sandy dirt.  It’s not possible…
I ran through the last tunnel, hopeful he’d still be there alone.  I stepped out into the arena.  I stared up ahead in despair.  The world was spinning, everything was happening so quickly.  My lover was with the lady who had once stood behind the door, the door I told him not to choose.  One second he grabs her hand, the next he kisses her, and then the crowd cheers.  Had he forgotten about me? I stopped disheartened, staring at the whole scene unravel in front of my eyes.
I couldn't take it, I got up and marched towards the newly wedded couple.  Except my confidence shrank as I got closer.  I stood in front of the lady, she bowed.
“Princess,” she whispered.
How dare she mock me?  I imagined her standing behind the door waiting for her new
husband, my lover.  My face reddened in anger, in jealousy.  I nodded my head stiffly.
“Come with me.” I said to my lover, now her husband.
“Yes Madam.” He said as if nothing had just happened.  Once we had gotten to a private area, underneath a tunnel, I took a deep breathe trying to mask my hurt.
“Why did you marry her?” I wouldn’t let myself cry, not in front of him.
“You led me to the tiger, you wanted me to die,” he paused, the silence was deafening.  “how does that show you love me?
“I gave you a sword!  I didn't want you to die, but I’d rather have that then you marry her!”  I gestured to the beautiful women standing in the center of the arena.  The truth had finally come out.
“You’re just selfish, and I want to be with someone that isn’t!  Your father would never let me marry you anyway.  It’s a lost hope.”  His words stung like lemon on a fresh wound.
“That’s not true.” I whispered, trying to reassure myself.
“Yes, it is true.  You’re a wonderful princess, but you’re just not the one for me.” I could see in his eyes he didn’t even believe his words, at least not yet.
“I loved you, but now I have another one to love.  I can only love one, and I’m choosing her.”  He said weakly, and walked back towards his bride.  I stood there in agony.  My one first love left me for another woman.  I could hear my heart shatter into a million pieces.
*Two Months Later*
They were a happy couple, my previous lover and his wife, the first two weeks they were all the people could talk about.  I didn’t care, I never wanted to hear anything about them.  I haven’t found anyone as good looking, charming, and sweet as him yet.  Nor will I ever, he was perfect.  News had spread that that they were expecting a child, a baby boy.
When I had found out about this child I was filled with regret, and despair.  Since then, two weeks ago, I have learned to forget about him and that deceiving lady.  Although there was still a piece of me trying to hold onto the love I’d once felt for him, I tried to ignore the nagging feelings of being alone.
My father regretted his actions, seeing his daughter in agony was not better than seeing his daughter happy.  There was nothing to do anymore, what’s done was done.
I was happy for him, not so much his wife.   He was happy and that’s all that matters.  Days in the kingdom have been better, I’ve learned to help out more, and try to be positive.
I’m just going to have to live on with the fact that he has someone else.  One day I’ll find the one, I’ll remember the feeling to be loved again.  For now I am happy.
Blog for 10/14/15
Prompt: Do any of the characters feeling change as you’ve read? Explain why or why
not.
Book: Eye of Minds
Author: James Dashner
Page #: 1 - 310 (Finished)
       Michael and his friends spend most of their time in the VirtNet, a gaming network.  When a mysterious girl kills herself, she dies in real life too.   This isn't supposed to happen so the VHS, who protect the VirtNet, assign Michael and his two other friends, Sarah and Bryson, on a mission to find this mysterious person who is causing these suicides.
 ~~~~

          Throughout the entire book, almost all of the main characters feelings start to change.  Michael's feelings change the most during the story.  He seems confident at first, when he first receives the mission he believes he and his friends can solve it.  Towards the middle he starts getting hesitant and worried about the fact that he might not succeed the mission assigned to him and his friends.  Towards the end he starts getting nervous, and wants to back out of the mission.  He starts to realize that he might not succeed and starts worrying about the future.  At the end of the book Michael is the exact opposite of what he felt in the beginning of the story.

          Sarah and Bryson's thoughts aren't portrayed as much as Michael's.  Bryson and Sarah are both hesitant at first, and a little more into the book are pretty confident.  Towards the middle of the book they start to feel almost frustrated and nervous, following Michael's emotions.  Towards the end they start feeling as if the whole mission was a bad idea, and contemplate if they should continue it or not.  Both try to be optimistic, but there is a string of worry that they feel.  At the end of the book it doesn't involve Sarah, nor Bryson's feelings but mainly focuses on Michael's feelings.

          Overall Michael's feelings are shown more throughout the entire story, and Bryson's and Sarah's are kind of put off.  All of their feelings almost match.  They're feelings change because as the book progresses more things start to get difficult for them and their feelings they first had start with developed more.  Almost everything that happens effects all of them which causes almost the same effect or feelings as one another, which leaves us Cause and Effect.  They're all effected the same way, and can express or show their feelings the same way.  All of the characters feelings start to change as the book progresses.

Top Ten Book Blog

1. The Maze Runner Series by James Dashner

     The Maze Runner series is my all time favorite books.  I first read it when I found out one of my favorite actors was going to be in the movie, Dylan O'Brien was going to star in the movie.  So I decided to read the book before the movie came out.  The series is just very well written and shows you how much your decisions will impact your life, and that not to take things granted.   And I'm so ready for the second prequel to come out in 2016.

2.  Eye of Minds by James Dashner

     Eye of Minds is a complex book that deals with a lot of technology and coding.  In the story you read about how Michael and his friends, Sarah and Bryson, go on an intense journey to stop Kaine and protect the VirtNet.

3.  Stung Series by Bethany Wiggins

      The Stung Series are very addictive book.  The story was kind of fast paced, and kept you entertained.  The story has some action and romance.  It was amazing to read how Fiona would live in a world where everyone was a potential danger.

4. The Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins

     The Hunger Games Series is defiantly an eye opener.  In the books you read through Katniss's point of view and see what her perspective is of everything, especially how it is to be the face of the rebellion.

5. Divergent Series by Veronica Roth

     I found the Divergent series a little bit too easy to read, but the plot was really interesting.  It is very similar to The Giver, but it has it's own unique twist.

6. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

     The movie trailer for The Fault in Our Stars first caught my attention.  Before watching the movie I wanted to read the book though.  And so I read about Hazel's and Gus's strong comedic relationship, and how they face their struggles together.

7. Paper Towns by John Green

     I also read Paper Towns because I wanted to read it before the movie came out.  It has a really nice plot, in which Quentin has a huge crush for Margo and would do anything to catch her attention.  Even going on a  nerve-wracking journey to find her when she goes missing.

8. A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz

      What caught my eye for A Tale Dark in Grimm was the fact that they were the original Grimm stories.  There's nothing sugarcoated about it.  This story happens to be about the real story of Hansel and Gretel.

9. In a Glass Grimmly by Adam Gidwitz

     In a Glass Grimmly follows the same idea of A Tale Dark and Grimm, but the author (Adam Gidwitz) thinks its far more worse.  This book is actually the story of Jack and Jill.

10. Life as We Knew It
by Susan Beth Pheffer

     Life as We Knew It was actually recommended to me by the librarian.  At first I didn't want to read it because it was written in a diary structure but then I still decided to read it.  It was actually very interesting to read about how Miranda and her family try to survive the crisis the moon had caused.

All About Me

          Hello, my name is Evelyn.  I am 13 and I'm in 7th grade.  I live in Illinois, and have never lived anywhere else.  I have two siblings, an older sister and a younger brother.  I live with them, and my parents.  We do a lot of things together, and I like to think that we are all pretty close.

          Some of my interests would be Youtube, 5SOS, and dogs.   I absolutely love watching Youtube videos, it doesn't really matter what genre I will practically watch anything that catches my eye.  5SOS (5 Seconds of Summer) is a band that I love listening to, I actually went to their concert over the summer.  I've always loved dogs, ever since I was very little and so it's just natural to me to get excited over ever dog I pass by.

          I don't really do much outside of school, other than going on the internet but some of my hobbies are baking and writing.  I love baking, I usually bake from scratch.  It's just something that I've picked up on over the years and it makes me happy.  I also love to write.  I've pursued in writing some stories on an app where you can write a story and share it.  So far I've gotten positive feedback, and will continue writing my story.

          There is not much too learn about me.  Other than the fact that I spend 85% percent of my life on the internet, and that I love baking and writing.  Hope this helped you learning a little bit about me.
